About the role
As a Azure Local Principal Engineer, you will to design, deploy, and support migrations to onpremises Azure connected infrastructure. We will count on you to lead the physical layer design and support build-out activities (rack/stack, power, cooling, cabling), implement Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) for resilient storage, and deploy HyperV for secure, highly available virtualization. Along the way, you will get to:
- Architecture & Design
- Support the data center physical design: node sizing and configuration, network considerations.
- Design Azure Local / Azure Stack HCI host, cluster, and storage architectures using S2D with performance and capacity tiers (NVMe/SSD/HDD) and RDMA (RoCE/iWARP) where applicable.
- Define network underlay for HCI and workloads: VLANs/VxLAN, DCB/PFC/ETS for SMB Direct, jumbo frames, QoS, LACP, MLAG (where applicable).
- Build & Deployment
- Remotely support rack/stack and physical installation activities; perform host imaging, BIOS/UEFI, firmware/driver baselining.
- Configure Hyper‑V with clustering, CSVs, Live/Storage Migration, vSwitches, NIC teaming, SR‑IOV, and MPIO as applicable.
- Deploy and validate S2D (health, cache, fault domains, resiliency settings), Storage QoS, resiliency (two/threeway mirror, mirroraccelerated parity)
- Implement Azure Arc for servers/Kubernetes, policy, and update management; integrate with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Defender for Cloud.
- Automation & Documentation
- Automate day 0/day n tasks using PowerShell (Desired State Configuration, modules for Hyper V, Failover Clustering, Az modules), Bicep/ARM for Azure artifacts, and Git based workflows.
- Produce high quality HLD/LLD, build guides, and knowledge articles.
What we’re looking for
- Physical layer experience across design and deployment: rack/stack, cabling requirements, fiber types & optics, power budgeting, airflow, and related documentation.
- Storage Spaces Direct (S2D): design, deployment, and operations - pool/virtual disk design, cache tiering, resiliency, SMB Direct/RDMA, DCB/PFC/ETS, and health monitoring.
- Hyper V & Failover Clustering: cluster build/ops, CSVs, Live Migration, vSwitch design, SR IOV, VM placement, HA/DR patterns.
- Strong Windows Server administration across multiple versions; and cluster lifecycle management.
- Solid networking fundamentals for data center environments (L2/L3, VLANs, routing, MTU, QoS, LACP, MLAG, routing adjacencies).
- Scripting/automation with PowerShell; comfort with Git and infrastructure as code principles.
- Experience integrating with Azure (Azure Arc, Azure Monitor/Log Analytics, Update Management, Defender for Cloud).
- Excellent documentation, stakeholder communication, and change management discipline (ITIL aligned).
- Typical background: 7+ years in data center engineering, virtualization, and/or HCI with at least 2–3 full lifecycle S2D/Hyper V cluster deployments.
