Microsoft DataOps Architect 

The DataOps Architect is a customer-facing role, that will be responsible for the design, modernization, and deployment of enterprise-level data estates, leveraging Microsoft’s ecosystem of data technologies and native Azure services, with strong focus on data governance and DataOps best practices.. This role will be working closely with technical leads from both the Cloud Practice and DevOps Practice, integrating the various data components with the overall solution, and ensuring it aligns with the industry best practices such as Well Architected and Cloud Adoption Frameworks 

 

This role is expected to provide technical thought leadership, establish proven design patterns and implementation processes for evaluating and/or rearchitecting data landscapes in a wide range of maturity states, creating the long-term remediation strategy, defining relevant milestones that help catalyze the customer’s business objectives.

 

They will be working with cloud engineers and developers to ensure best practices and proper utilization of resources. A successful candidate will also be responsible for working with the customers with model deployment / operations. You will also help in making sure they have all the tools and insights needed to make informed decisions about the maintenance and evolution of the data landscape  

Strong familiarity with the Azure cloud platform is obviously a must, specifically experience with Azure and Microsoft data platforms, as well as BI, reporting, data pipelines, and data warehouses / data lakes

 

Responsibilities  

  • Provide senior level technical expertise assessing and modernizing obsolete / partially deployed data warehouses, unconsolidated collections of proprietary data islands, haphazard and poorly managed user data repos, etc. helping them move to a modernized data landscape, leveraging centralized data lake, with proper governance framework to empower self-service analytics and democratized modeling and data movement aimed at analyst communities
  • Act as lead resource for data estate architecture reviews; perform readiness assessment for cloud and help with the appropriate migration strategies and reference architecture 
  • Work in tandem with a cloud architect assessing an application’s cloud readiness, this role will focus on the customer's data ecosystem, and provide overview of its cloud readiness, as well as gap analysis for their data management and governance
  • Provide technical leadership and become a trusted advisor to the cloud & data teams; provide guidance in adopting the best practices, proper governance, and empowered analyst user stories
  • Works with business users to design, develop, test, and implement business intelligence solutions in the Data & Analytics Platform. Build Data Lakes / Data Catalogs to provide actionable insights into prioritized processes and data points, and other key business performance metrics
  • Develop optimal data pipeline architecture to align it with business requirements
  • Design the end-to-end aspects of the data architecture including resilience and optimized for performance, cost, and security in-line with well-architected framework & industry best practices
  • Collaborate closely with developers helping to leverage DevOps best practices, following agile methodology, helping modernize their processes and adopt continuous integration & development methodology
  • Ensure security is integrated into all workflows, data repositories, and architecture solutions; work to continuously build and improve security posture [KeyVault, Policies, RBAC, Data Privacy, Classification, etc]  
  • Creating and maintaining reference architecture documentation 
  • Stay abreast of industry best practices, identify and drive opportunities to improve reference architectures, and implementation processes  

 

Skills  

  • 5+ years experience with traditional data warehousing, multidimensional + tabular models, writing / optimizing data pipelines, full BI stack of reporting and dashboards
  • Solid proficiency in traditional RMDBS and EDW platforms: SQL Server, Postgres, MySQL, SSIS, SSAS, Dimension & Fact Tables, Indexing, etc
  • Proficient in at least 2 modern data querying languages: T-SQL, Kusto, DAX, PowerQuery, etc. Should have good experience in optimal data extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of on-premise and cloud data sources, and deal with variety of File formats – Tabular, Parquet, CSV, JSON etc
  • Experience with NoSQL platforms: MongoDB, CosmosDB, Cassandra, etc
  • Intermediate proficiency with Excel / PowerPivot and PowerBI
  • Strong focus on Microsoft Data Fabric ecosystem: Data Factory, Purview / Data Catalog, Power BI, Activator, ADLSv2 / OneLake, Data Explorer / Kusto.
  • Real-world understanding of data governance, data mapping, data catalogs, self-service data repos, etc
  • Understanding of Azure Well Architected Framework; Experience deploying and conforming to Azure / cloud architecture best practices: governance, resiliency, security 
  • Hands-on experience configuring Azure environment, designing and deploying data solutions with Azure IaaS and PaaS services   
  • Experience designing and deploying data protection and encryption mechanisms and integrating with key management [I.e. Azure Key Vault]
  • Experience with DevOps practices: GitOps / GitHub, Azure DevOps Repos / Pipelines, etc
  • Experience working on large, complex projects following Agile / Scrum methodology, collaborating with developers in larger overarching software development lifecycle process
  • DESIRABLE: Experience with streaming / IOT data tools: IOT Hub, Stream Analytics, Data Explorer, Time Series Insights
  • DESIRABLE: Exposure to and experience with ML Engineering, MLOps, Azure ML Services, Copilot, Knowledge Mining / Search, etc
  • DESIRABLE: Big data platforms – Spark, Pandas / PySpark, Hive / Spark SQL, Kafka

The compensation range for this position is typically $150,000 to $210,000 – based upon various factors - with additional bonuses and benefits available.  We will also consider candidates outside of this range if required.
